About Face Design Signs AIGA Philadelphia’s Intern Pledge
About Face Design (AFD) has joined with AIGA Philadelphia in promoting and participating in a great new campaign “to support the ethical treatment of professional designers and students in the workplace.” This new campaign, lead in part by AIGA Philadelphia’s President, Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel, is aimed at local companies who employ interns.
Since 2003, AFD has provided an internship program for students interested in a graphic design career. Overseen by AFD’s Visual Director, Peter Camburn, interns have helped with many aspects of managing the creative agency. Whether it’s project management, design production or Web site maintenance, AFD’s interns play an active roll in helping keep up with the workload in a creative field.
“In the summer of 2003, Ryan Bednar was my first intern. He was starting at Drexel that coming year and I recall how difficult it was to begin assigning him tasks. I never had an intern before, so I didn’t know what to expect; and I don’t think he knew what to expect either but I guess things worked out well,” recalls Peter. Ryan graduated from Drexel in 2008 and now works for a Philadelphia advertising agency.
Since Ryan’s internship, AFD has fostered inters from the University of Pennsylvania, American University and Philadelphia University, where Peter is currently an adjunct instructor.
